‘Fortified Thorikos? The excavations of 2018’ .

The 2018 campaign of the Thorikos Fieldwork Project (TFP) focused on the study of a large wall constructed of roughly hewn local stones. It was hypothesised beforehand that this wall formed part of a larger fortification around the ancient town of Thorikos in Southern Attica. While fortification works are known to have existed on the nearby peninsula of Aghios Nikolaos, Thorikos’ Belgian excavators in the twentieth century had been sceptical of the existence of such a wall surrounding the classical town itself. In this talk it is argued that the recent explorations support the existence of a defence system, one that quite possibly dates to the period of the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 BC).
